Part I: WEAR
SINCE ANCIENT TIMES, metallurgists have been confronted with the mechanisms by which metals interact with the three basic environments of Wear . . . Corrosion . . . and Oxidation that can lead to failure. An understanding of these mechanisms is basic to figuring out how to improve a component surface. When the environment in which components must perform has been defined, the correct surface modification or coating can be planned, which will resist that environment with the best cost/performance tradeoff.
In real world industrial situations, the three main mechanisms of surface attack generally occur together. However, to facilitate more rapid download, we will treat them as separate topics. This section is devoted to some of the more common wear problems and queries received regarding them. While we will present relatively simple descriptions of the mechanisms, the kinetics -- what happens as a function of time -- are very important. We hope you will find the material both informative and helpful.
