Wear seems to be very simple, why is it considered a complex issue?



A:

  • The Definition of wear =
    Unwanted removal of material from --
    or displacement of material on -- a surface.

  • The problem is -- it usually occurs with other
    mechanical/chemical phenomena, such as fatigue
    and/or corrosion, and/or oxidation.

  • Its complexity becomes obvious when we
    try to classify and describe the types of wear, as can be
    seen from the following chart.
