SINCE ANCIENT TIMES, metallurgists have been confronted with the mechanisms by which metals interact with the three basic environments of Wear . . . Corrosion . . . and Oxidationand lead to failure. Understanding mechanisms is basic to figuring out how to improve a component surface. When the environment in which components must perform has been defined, the correct surface modification or coating can be planned, which will resist that environment with the tradeoff in cost and performance.

In real world industrial situations, the three main mechanisms of surface attack generally occur together. However, to facilitate more rapid download, we will treat them as separate topics. This section is devoted to some of the more common oxidation issues and queries received regarding them. While we will present relatively simple descriptions of the mechanisms, the kinetics -- what happens as a function of time -- are very important.
