What are the Electronic Characteristics
of the Group IV Elements?

  • Group IV Elements (C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) have
    four valence electrons.

    - They are on the borderline between metallic
      and non-metallic behavior.

  • Carbon has a high ionization energy and is a
    classic non-metal.

  • Lead has a moderately low ionization
    potential and is a metal.

  • Tin is allotropic/polymorphic. In one
incarnation it is metallic; in the other, it
    is non-metallic.

  • Si and Ge are Semiconductors: Their properties
are midway between those of conventional metals
    and non-metals.
