Q:
What are the Five Broad Ceramic Categories?

A:
  • GLASSES: Mostly based on silica (SiO2).

  • VITREOUS CERAMICS: Fired clays consisting of
crystalline phases (mainly silicates) bonded by
    a glassy, siliceous (vitreous) phase.

  • HIGH PERFORMANCE CERAMICS: Used in
situations where high temperature and high wear
    resistance are needed.

  • CEMENT/CONCRETE: Major construction
materials. Portland cement is a mixture of CaO,
SiO2 and Al2O3 that sets when mixed with water.

  • NATURAL CERAMICS: Construction materials
such as Limestone, Sandstone, Granite, Ice.
